My presentation focuses on two famous well known artists 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake, my critical investigation is about how male artists are represented through R&B music which I found interesting as there are many different male artists with different styles to music and therefore each portray themselves differently which could be a positive or negative influence to some audiences. I decided to pick dominant icons in the music industry especially in R&B today, I wanted to choose two artist, one who was portrayed in a positive way (Justin Timberlake) and one in a negative way (50 Cent). I analysed one of their music videos which was great examples of how these two artist were being established and how they were different and what kind of examples in the video could be positive or negative influences towards the audience. Furthermore I decided to analyse the lyrics of both music videos to show a clear understanding of what both artists want their audiences to see them as. I compared both music videos as both were strongly different and showed different meanings of the artists. I found looking at two artists was a better presentation as the music industry has many topics to choose from as well as genres therefore I thought choosing a genre and two artists would be a more narrow option for me to investigate. As I wanted to stick with music I have decided to keep this as my extended academic essay, by improving my knowledge on the question by adding how the representation effects society, reflects a young or older audience, stereotypes and more. I think mentioning more media knowledge into my critical investigation would help me improve my presentation and show a better clear understanding of how men are represented in R&B music? These two artists were easy to compare and have both different music styles however I enjoy their music which makes this topic more interesting for me as I find out more.
